Unlike gold plated jewellery, Gold Vermeil consists of 925 Sterling Silver (known for its durability and strength) and is coated with a thick layer (no less than 2.5 microns) of gold. The difference between gold plated jewellery and gold vermeil jewellery is that gold vermeil jewellery is plated using only precious metals such as gold, silver, rhodium and rose gold. Typically gold plated jewellery consists of a base metal more often than not unspecified, coated with a thin layer of gold which can lead to accelerated tarnishing. To ensure a long lasting finish, we coat our 925 Sterling silver with 3 microns 18K gold or rhodium.
To maintain the colour and shine of your pieces, remove jewellery before exercising, swimming and showering. Try not to apply perfumes, creams or other chemical-based liquids whilst wearing your jewellery as they can interact with the metals and cause discolouration. We recommend that you store your jewellery in its original packaging or another suitable lined box or pouch. Ensure that your jewellery is stored together with the black anti-tarnish tab provided. We also recommend that you clean and polish your jewellery regularly.
For Routine Cleaning:
To maintain the colour and shine and to remove any build-up of dirt and premature tarnish of your jewellery, gently rub and polish your jewellery with a soft cloth or microfibre cloth. Make sure that the cloth that you are using is clean, and nonabrasive. Take special care when cleaning jewellery with stones. All Olena pieces come with a complementary microfibre cloth which is suitable for routine cleaning.

Our Gold and Rhodium Vermeil jewellery is crafted from a Sterling Silver base which is coated with precious metals (18k Yellow Gold or Rhodium). Fine silver, which is 99.9% pure silver, is generally too soft and malleable for producing jewellery. Instead fine silver is alloyed with other metals to create sterling silver (92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals) to create long lasting and durable jewellery. Silver is a stable element, however the added metals in sterling silver are prone to reacting with their surroundings, which can cause the jewellery to tarnish. Tarnish on vermeil jewellery generally appears as brown or dark spots. This process is accelerated when pieces are exposed to water, chemicals, high temperatures or humidity.
Removing tarnish is simple, we recommend using our complementary Olena Jewellery microfibre cloth to rub and polish away the tarnish. Please refer to our Materials & Care page for more details on how to clean your jewellery. If you are still unable to remove the tarnish, you can return your pieces to us for cleaning and polishing, for a fee. Olena ships on a Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) basis. This means you may be charged for customs duties and import taxes on your order, which Olena has no control over, as these policies vary widely from country to country. If customs duties and import taxes arise, they must be paid by the person receiving the parcel.
All orders are prepared and shipped within 24-hours of being placed, you will therefore only have a limited window to amend or cancel your order.
